Personally, don't be a mercenary, and don't become a vassal for Swadia. The king is pretty crap at keeping a kingdom and doesn't really treat vassals that good. Just work a independent chappy, doing quests for lords until they actually want you to become a vassal. Being a mercenary allows me to loot villages with impunity though. A faction needs to be at war before it starts looking for mercenary help. Hiring mercenaries in peacetime is a waste of money. Once you are a merc with a faction, though, I'm almost certain you can renew your contract as long as you please regardless of war. Thanks to the game’s skill system, you have to tune your character around the gameplay experience you wish to have. If you plan to be a mercenary in Mount and Blade: Bannerlord, you need to start with good combat skills. Choose a weapon type and stick to it—no use using trade skills if you don’t plan to be a trader.
