So far I've found 8 different "European repair specialists", and only 2 have even been willing to touch the motor. The 2 quotes were $3,500-$4,500 (Cynically wondering why the cost is so "low") and the other was a minimum of $6,500, but they expect it to be more, once they dig in and see what else shows excessive wear.

He did say that it would be unusual for the covers to leak at 72k miles though, and thought that it could possibly be the filter housing leaking. I smell a dishonest repair shop. Up through 2006 it's a timing belt. Also, they know (or should know) that the timing chain 40v non FSI V8 used in the 2004 and up S4 and A6 had chain guide cracking problems, but the timing chain 32v FSI V8 in the 2007 and up A8 is a newer design that doesn't have the issue. Received 1,333 Likes on 1,132 Posts. All B8 use the EA888 engine, which is chain drive. B7 and earlier used the EA113 engine, which is belt drive. Audi has no statement on chain replacement; it's a "lifetime" item. What Audi doesn't say is lifetime in their bean metrics is 120k miles.
